Integrated Cornerstone Design Projects in Engineering

Project 1

Project 1

Renewable Technology Challenge

Custom-designed wind turbine that prioritizes low costs, high efficiency, and reliability to be built in Calgary, one of Canada’s windiest large cities, to reduce the electricity bills of the residents’ homeowners.

Project 2

Project 2

Get a Grip

Custom-designed computer program to transfer containers containing surgical tools securely to their respective autoclave location for sterilization while using two adjustable potentiometers, in order to provide basic healthcare for Canadians living in rural and remote areas*.*

Project 3

Project 3

Revenge of the Recycling System

Custom-designed mechanism that would deposit containers into a recycling bin. This mechanism would be mounted on top of a Q-bot and would hold the containers in a recycling hopper during the bot's movement before depositing the items into the recycling bin.

Project 4

Project 4

Power in Community

Custom-designed product that would aid Tim and Kim, two individuals facing physical impairments, in their daily lives. With Tim's visual impairment caused by diabetes and Kim's loss of motor function and stability in her hands, the team aimed to design a mug that would simplify their daily tasks. The resulting product incorporated unique features that would benefit both Tim and Kim, while also being professionally attention-grabbing.

⚡️ Renewable Technology Challenge (P1)

Overview

đź’ˇOur team was assigned a scenario to design a mini wind turbine that can be easily installed on the roofs of residential houses. The homeowners want to take advantage of the city's solid winds and reduce electricity bills. The design must consider the limited space on many residential roofs and ensure that the turbines do not collide with neighbouring roofs or turbines. This constraint is crucial in areas with closely packed houses, such as semi-detached or row houses. Also, we had taken into consideration the deflection of the plate, which was a hard constraint as it must be smaller than 10 mm.

🦾 Get a Grip (P2)

Overview

đź’ˇOur team was given the task of finding a solution that would allow for the secure transfer of surgical instruments to an autoclave for sterilization, in order to provide basic healthcare for Canadians living in rural and remote areas. We were introduced to the principles of rapid prototyping and computing. The team was divided into two subteams: a modeling subteam and a computing subteam. The computing team was responsible for writing a functional computer code that would securely transfer the containers to their designated autoclave locations for sterilization, using two adjustable potentiometers. My approach to the computing aspect of the solution involved trial and error, utilizing prior knowledge, and properly using built-in functions. I implemented seven functions in the code to pick up, transfer, and drop the container into the correct autoclave. Additionally, I included instructions in the program that would be displayed on the screen, providing user-friendly step-by-step guidance.
